Lighting
I have chosen the film extract ‘Hancock’ which is a Hybrid film of comedy and action, was released in 2008 and directed by Peter Berg. The still image I have chosen is from the film called ‘Love and Basketball’ it is a romantic drama film released in 2000; it shows a young couple sitting down looking and talking to each other.

Hancock

In this short extract we have two superheroes that are deeply in love but cannot be with each other because it kills them when they have been together and close for too long
( 0:00 -0:30 )When Hancock is on the bed staring at the woman , the lighting used is low key lighting you can see the dark and light contrasts on Hancock’s face and it relates a lot with their facial expressions as it is quite an emotional scene this type of effect is called chiaroscuro which is Italian for light and dark. There is also some use of top lighting  this is used to stress the characters features it is used usually to make film stars look glamorous but in this case it is use to emphasize the deep emotion you can see from the tears on their faces that they both are feeling as they face the hard fact that they need to be away from each other in order to live even though they are in love.
(00:30 -00:38) In this scene you can see an entrance of two male figures you can’t see any colour but black and no facial features are shown. This type of lighting is called ‘Back Lighting’ and it creates a silhouetted effect and its shot from behind the object. Also you can’t see any facial features or any specific design on clothing and this creates a distorted effect which is known as Under lighting. This is mainly used in horror films and it give the right effect in this scene because they are coming to kill Hancock.
(1:16 -1:57) In this scene the lighting used here again would low key lighting and later on in the scene when the killer enters the scene it would be back lighting as he is still silhouetted. Until later on in the scene we have the two film meeting and Hancock recognising who his killer is we have High key lighting this is type of lighting helps makes a scene look more realistic and focuses on the dimly lit scene more filter lights are used to dim down the lights already being used in the scenes unlike low key lighting light and dark are not as emphasized.

In this image the type of lighting used is High Key Lighting, filler lights are majorly used to make this intense and passionate scene more realistic the contrasts between light and dark are less but the effect depict a well lit room and fully focus on the young couple. The other effect used in the still shot is Top Lighting, this really emphasizes the features on both of the film stars face and also makes them look more glamorous and attractive. This type of lighting is usually taken from above.
